West of Glasgow, the PA area runs from Paisley, Renfrew, Johnstone and Erskine down the Clyde to Port Glasgow, Greenock and Gourock, then across Argyll (the mainland part only) to Dunoon, Inveraray, Lochgilphead, Campbeltown and Oban.

Lanarkshire towns usually carry an ML postcode: Hamilton, Motherwell, Wishaw, Airdrie, Coatbridge, Bellshill and Larkhall, with Lanark, Carluke and Biggar further up the Clyde valley.

Ayrshire is the KA area. Kilmarnock and Ayr are its largest towns, alongside Irvine, Prestwick, Troon, Kilwinning, Saltcoats, Ardrossan and Largs on the coast, and Cumnock and Girvan to the south.

In the south, DG covers Dumfries, Annan, Lockerbie, Castle Douglas, Newton Stewart and Stranraer, while the Borders towns of Galashiels, Hawick, Kelso, Melrose, Selkirk, Jedburgh and Duns sit in TD.
